Digital media files - images, animations, audio and video - can all be uploaded to UpStage and assigned to a live stage to be used in your performances.
Please see the previous chapters on Creating Graphics for UpStage and Creating Audio for UpStage for tips on creating media. This chapter explains how to upload media that you have created or sourced to use in your UpStage performances.
To upload media to UpStage, first navigate to the Media section of the Backstage by clicking on "Media" in the top menu bar.
You arrive at the list of all available media on this UpStage instance. The list shows a preview of the media, its name, type, who uploaded it, any stages that the media item has been assigned to, when it was uploaded, the licence of the media, and buttons to edit, download or delete the media item.
In the banner at the top of the screen you will see the button "New +". Click on this and a file upload window opens. Navigate to where the media item you want to upload is located on your computer. Select the file and click "open".
The media management window opens at the Preview tab. Here you can:
Note that your file is not uploaded until you click the green "Save" button in the top left-hand corner. Before saving the media item, you may want to make further changes to the settings for this media item.
Click on the "Copyright" tab at the top left of the Media Management window. You will see a list of the Copyright level that you want attached to your media. When other artist wants to use your media in their Stage, they know their rights and options.
Click on the "Stage" tab at the top left of the Media Management window. You will see a list of the stages that you own or have been given edit access to, as well as those that can have this media item assigned to them.
Hover the cursor over a stage name; it will be highlighted in green, with a white plus (+) icon. Click on it and the stage will move to the right-hand list, which shows the stages that this media item is assigned to.
To remove the media item from a stage, hover over the stage name in the right-hand list; it will be highlighted in red, with a white minus (-) icon. Click on it and the stage will move back to the left-hand list.
You can assign or unassign the media item from all stages in a list by clicking on the green ">>" or "<<" buttons.
Note that unassigning a media item from a stage does not delete it from the UpStage server. It will no longer be available to use on the live stage that you have unassigned it from. It will still be avaliable on other stages, and in the Media Management interface.
If you have chosen Avatar as the type of this media item, there wil be a "Voice" tab in the Media Management window. Here you can adjust the avatar's text2speech voice by selecting a Voice and Variant, and adjusting the sliders for Pitch, Rate and Volume. Test the voice by entering the text you want to hear spoken in the test field and clicking the green circle at the right-hand end of the text input field. You will hear the text sopken in the voice you have set, and can make further adjustments until you are satisfied.
Clicking "Save" once you have modified the voice will mean that this voice will be used for this media item on all stages. See the chapter on Avatar Speech and Voices in the Live Stage section for how to adjust the voice on the live stage.
If you want create a hyperlinked media, write the URL here. During the cyberformances, the Audience can then click on it to open the url with their browser.
If your media item is an Avatar, Prop or Backdrop, there will be a "Multiframe" tab in the Media Management window. Here you can create a multiframe animation by combining several images together. You must first upload the required images as individual media items.
On the Multiframe tab, click on the Multiframe toggle; it will become green, and you will see a list of the available media (avatars, props and backdrops). Hover over the thumbnail of a media item that you want to include in your multiframe; it will become green with a white plus (+) icon. Click on it and it will move to the right-hand column.
To remove an image from the multiframe, hover over the thumbnail in the right-hand list; it will be highlighted in red, with a white minus (-) icon. Click on it; the media item will move back to the left-hand list.
Click on the green "Save" button in the lower right-hand corner to upload your media item and save any other changes that you have made. You can return to the Media Management window at any time to edit the media item.
